BOA Meets Itoku Market Leaders, Warns Traders on Delayed Dues
Abeokuta, July 11, 2025 —
The Executive Chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government, Hon. Balogun Olaniyi Afeez (BOA), has called on traders at the popular Itoku Market to promptly settle their market dues or risk having their shops locked up.
The chairman made this known during a meeting with market leaders and stakeholders held at the Local Government Secretariat. The delegation was led by the Iya Loja of Itoku, Chief (Mrs.) Olufunmilayo Ayorinde.
Hon. BOA emphasized the importance of timely payment of ground rent and other statutory levies by market traders. He noted that continued default in meeting financial obligations could result in sanctions, including the closure of shops and stalls.
“The local government relies on these revenues to provide services, maintain infrastructure, and ensure a safe and thriving market environment,” he said. “We want to sustain a system where everyone contributes responsibly to the development of the market and the local economy.”
Speaking to journalists over the phone, the Supervisor for Information, Education and Sports, Mr. Jimoh Waheed (Ameriso), explained that the meeting was convened to gain first-hand insight into the challenges traders are facing within the market. He added that it also served as an avenue to enlighten them about the local government’s ongoing efforts to improve their welfare and the business environment.
“In the same way the council has obligations to the market, the traders also have a responsibility to fulfill theirs, which includes the timely payment of dues,” Mr. Waheed noted.
The meeting was attended by top local government officials, including the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Mustapha Kodaolu; Acting Head of Local Government Administration, Mr. Babatunde Folarin Adesina; Local Government Treasurer, Mr. Awotimehin Tosin; Supervisor for Community, Barr. Kehinde Ayodeji; Special Adviser on Health, Hon. Ogundimu Wasiu; Special Adviser on Women Affairs, Mrs. Balogun Jemilat; Special Adviser on WES, Mr. Koyejo Olayinka; and the Local Government Revenue Accountant, Mr. Adejobi Olasunkanmi.
Market leaders welcomed the engagement and pledged continued cooperation with the council to enhance revenue generation and ensure sustained development within Itoku Market
